The format of the event was designed to challenge participants, with each startup allotted three minutes to pitch their concept to the audience and judges. Following their pitch, participants faced a five-minute Q&A session, during which they had to defend and elaborate on their ideas in front of an expert panel of judges.

After careful deliberation, the expert panel of judges, composed of industry veterans and investors, declared SharkGate the winner of the AIBC Europe 2023 Pitch. The decision was based on the startup’s innovation, market potential, and the team’s ability to communicate their vision effectively within the challenging time constraints.

During their pitch, SharkGate managed to deliver a compelling pitch within the tight time constraints, effectively conveying the uniqueness and potential impact of their product.

Congratulations for winning the AIBC Pitch competition. How are you feeling right now? Are you enjoying the inaugural SiGMA Africa Summit?

Thank you, we feel amazing! The Expo is awesome and well-organised. Full-on appreciation to the organising committee for inviting and having us here.

We’re very happy to have you here ourselves! Do you think there are some qualities to your pitch; the way you presented your ideas perhaps, or even the idea itself, that helped you stand out from the rest of the competitors?

I think our product is solid. We love our product and we believe in the importance of going onwards with it. It’s going to be highly disruptive, across Africa and the rest of the world.

Can you tell me more about your project? What is it about??

Sure. So Crypsense Digital Group is a capacity building and accelerator program. It will primarily be allowing companies to be deeply involved in the Web3 space remotely from a Web2 space.

We also have a financial asset front, a digital asset management platform where we analyse and determine what kind of assets are lucrative to invest in. Our analyses generate revenue from these predictions.

Do you have any planned partnerships ahead, any other companies that are on board with your projects?

Well, we are always open to establishing partnerships. We partner with top-tier, strategic partners to see that we achieve our agenda. We have partnerships across different divides for our custodial services. We have fire blocks. And in terms of training, we have distributed labs for product development.

I also understand that your project has something to do with essentially gamifying how we do education. How do you think that this will empower students?

We are changing the way education is done over a long period of time. Ideally, we reduce the number of notes and boring lectures that are pushing students from caring about their education. We want to make our methods of education more interesting and fun. It’s easier to incentivize students to pay attention once you have engaged them in this way.

The gamification process lies in the reward systems. The faster you learn, the more efficiently you finish your assignments, and you get rewarded for it. So the rewards are crucial and come in a wide variety. They could be NFT-based, scholarships, paid subscriptions.

Do you think that this project runs the risk of impacting educators negatively??

In a way, the job of educators is to educate their students. If you see the gamification of education as a tool that helps educators get this job done, it becomes an interesting concept that we need to adopt more in our day-to-day lives. In other words, projects like ours won’t replace educators but make them more effective.

From a development point of view, what’s next in your journey?

Next on our journey is the launch pad. We are also developing our DApp for the virtual trading platform which we’re gearing up for this quarter and should be ready for testing in the next.

Let’s step away from the project for a while and let’s head into startup hivemind. How supportive of startups do you feel the community is in Africa?

I believe we’ve been lucky enough to have great support from many in the industry throughout our journey. We have received some crucial support from the African Blockchain Center, and have also been invited to the World Economic Forum. So the support has come from a number of sectors across the world.

I’d like to say that perhaps, we’re not quite as lucky as we have been blessed.

How impactful do you think events like the SiGMA Africa Summit are when it comes to startup projects such as yours? Do you have any advice for up-and-coming startups?

The SiGMA Africa Summit has given us a significant boost when it comes to networking, by bringing together big brands which essentially can hold your hand as they help you grow with them. Attending and winning this competition has been a significant part of our journey, one which we will remember forever.

For advice, I’ll just repeat what the judge said… “be aggressive!” Avoid being inconsistent with your work ethic and methods. Push for your hopes and dreams, and keep your eyes and ears open. Solutions to your long-term problems may come from the unlikeliest places and people!

A physicist, researcher and a major pioneer for Blockchain technologies, Stornetta’s 1991 publication, alongside Stuart Haber, set in motion the widespread incorporation of the revolutionary digital hierarchy technology that came to be known as Blockchain. He will be gracing the judges’ panel, bringing with him over 30 years of experience in scientific innovation.

Congratulations on winning the 2021 AIBC Pitch! Now that the excitement has died down, how does Mysa intend to follow up on this success?

Thank you! And thanks to all the unsung heroes at AIBC/SiGMA for putting on a great show, conference, and giving startups such a great opportunity! As for us… who said the excitement has died down? We are very proud of our victory and will surely be yelling about it from the rooftops for the foreseeable future! Needless to say: our team is just as excited as ever. If anything, we’re even more fired up than before. Right now we’re pushing hard now to get everything we need to get our first deREIT up and running.

What’s missing from traditional real estate economics? How does Mysa Finance intend to fill this gap?

As our team wonderfully put it during the pitch, real estate economics are missing “openness, fairness, and a low barrier to entry.” The real estate market is very intimidating for first time home buyers, and sometimes even for more experienced investors… Most people don’t want to dedicate their lives to learning the ins-and-outs of real estate, they just want to buy or rent a nice property and live their lives, and that’s what we intend to empower them to do.

Blockchain technology is the perfect solution for this because it has the full potential to be completely open, unbiased, and accessible to anyone. Our deREIT is the first step in making all this a reality, it will serve as a “proof of concept”.

As someone who just bought a house, I know first hand that buying property is complicated and tedious – how will putting the real estate economy on the blockchain help make transactions simpler and more accessible?

First of all, congratulations on buying a house! I’m sure you did your research and made a smart purchase, and that is one of the keys to growing your wealth, so bravo to you! The goal of making transactions simpler and more accessible is to lay everything that people need to make wise investment decisions (and follow through with them) right in front of them on a silver platter. Although the legal landscape of many countries may not allow for it today, we are taking solid steps towards having all real estate transactions on a public blockchain.

This means that eventually, all or most price (and other) data will be publicly available, trustworthy, and verifiable… and that will allow people to have all the data they need to make wise investment decisions. After that, it will just be an arms race full of healthy competition (ideally) for platforms to organize this data and allow users to interact with the DeFi world. Mysa intends to be one of, if not the, top platform like this.

Is the industry moving in this direction yet, what are some of the hurdles to adoption?

Yes. It is moving in the direction, but very slowly. The reason it’s not moving more quickly is the legal framework around real estate. It’s very hard to e.g. tie the ownership of real estate to a virtual token. While we can move very quickly in the blockchain and DeFi worlds… when it comes to physical real estate, you are still oftentimes limited to the speed of your local government. We’re doing the best we can to work with and show lawmakers the power and utility of DeFi, but at the end of the day… It will take time before it’s adopted on a governmental level. This is why so many blockchain real estate projects before us have failed — they underestimated or just couldn’t find a way to work with the legal aspects of real estate. We are patient, we believe we can soldier through the tough times, and we are committed to fighting the good fight.

Crypto investors can earn passive-based income from your NFT-based investment tool – tell us more about this.

Soon we will release our utility token, $MYSA. If you stake $MYSA, you get an NFT. That NFT entitles you to a portion of the profits from the real estate we manage. The profit is paid out regularly in our token, so you earn income without lifting a finger. I’m simplifying here, but essentially: owning our NFT is just like owning income-generating real estate, without having to manage it. Long story short: staking $MYSA = sweet, sweet passive income for you.

When can we expect the MYSA token to be released?

I can’t make any promises, but if all goes perfectly well: our public sale should go live by the end of next year (2022). We’d prefer to under-promise and over-deliver, so emphasis on the “if” and “should”.

Can you explain in more depth about how you employ machine learning to value property and perform risk analysis?

Property value and risk assessment are some of the most important factors when it comes to real estate investment. Machine learning is an incredible technology that has come a long way in recent years… So it’s only natural for us to put 2 and 2 together: We source lots of good, clean real estate data and use machine learning to model how the value of any given property might change over time. This backs up our investment decisions, allows users to know the value of their investments, and identifies potential investments we might not have found ourselves. In an interview with the AIBC Team, myLaminin’s Founder and CEO Ash Bassili spoke about his plans in the near future and his Summit experience.

So first of all, I just want to ask you how you feel about this win.

Great. I was really and pleasantly surprised. I didn’t expect this coming into it. Honestly it was our first SiGMA event. So yeah, it’s great to get a reward if you will. So it’s fantastic.

How are you gonna invest the funds?

If we’re so fortunate to get the funds, we’re gonna build the team which is exactly what was our plan. We need to get the Business development, sales and marketing components in place and I think that’s gonna drive us right now.

Any upcoming projects we can expect to see?

We’re looking at the tokens. We think the burn-mint equilibrium might be of interest and could be applicable to what we’re doing so we’re evaluating that. We haven’t pulled the trigger on it, but we’re very close and this may help us attack that problem.

What advice would you give to other startups competing in the next pitch?

Practice. I think it comes down to really getting an intimate understanding of all aspects of your service. Everything from competition to differentiators, to your clients and what they’re looking for in it. Once you have that clarity of understanding, I think it all comes together.

How important do you think pitches like this are for startups to get a leg up?

I think my co-founder Deanne will tell you that we’ve taken every opportunity to pitch. At times we weren’t ready and at times we were, but every opportunity to pitch is a good opportunity to practice a full story and I think that made a difference for us.

How has your experience been here at SiGMA?

We’ll be looking for more. We look forward to attending Dubai in 2023!

Top 10 things you need to know for the AIBC Summit

10.) Where and when will the AIBC Americas 2022 expo be held?

This year’s AIBC Summit will take place at one of Toronto’s biggest venues – the Enercare Centre at Exhibition Place on the 7th and 8th of June, 2022. Both the expo and the conferences will take place in the same venue.

9.) How can I get to the expo?

Before arriving in Canada you must download the ArriveCAN app to provide mandatory travel information prior to entry. All international travelers will also need to apply for an eTA visa. You can find any travel and tourism updates here. Free shuttle buses will be available throughout the day to take delegates from our selected hotels to the exhibition center and back. Pickup is every 20-30 min, running from 8:30 AM till 6:00 PM.

Alternatively you can get to the Enercare Centre by Bus, Subway, Streetcar or Train. These are the lines and routes that have stops nearby:

Train: LW
Subway: 1
Streetcar: The 509 runs along the harbourfront and stops right across from the Enercare Centre.
